SEP 23	In human adolescents, a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), rs2304297, in the 3′-UTR of the nicotinic receptor subunit gene, CHRNA6, has been associated with increased smoking. Dr. Anjelica Cárdenas and colleagues, from the laboratory of Dr. Shahrdad Lotfipour, demonstrate that the human CHRNA6 3′-UTR SNP is functional using in vivo rodent models.

SEP 23	Drs. Sudario, Saadat, Wiechmann and colleagues used a novel educational method and found that escape boxes are adaptable to a virtual format and can teach abstract concepts such as teamwork and communication in addition to traditional lecture content
SEP 19	A study by Dr. Mark Langdorf and colleagues concluded that Civilian public mass shootings cause substantial morbidity. For every death, 5.8 individuals are injured. These results suggest that including nonfatal injuries in the overall burden of civilian public mass shootings, may help inform public policy to prevent and mitigate the harm caused by such events.

Resident participants presented a patient case, while faculty were challenged to solve the case and discuss the differential diagnosis. Megan Osborn was the faculty discussant winner for Division 6. She will compete in the finals at the ACEP Scientific Assembly in Denver, CO on October 27, 2019

MAY 20	Drs. Koenig, Schultz, and Stratton are in Italy teaching in the European Master of Disaster Medicine Course. Dr. Koenig is there on a Fulbright Scholarship, a prestigious award for visiting professors from the US to travel for academic activities to foreign countries.
