Letter from the Chair

UCI Health Marketing & Communications
Chris Fox, MD, chair, Department of Emergency Medicine, UCI School of Medicine

We are very enthusiastic about emergency medicine education! We believe that emergency medicine is the most exciting, dynamic, and challenging specialty in medicine. We are proud to be called emergency physicians and feel a great responsibility to take care of “anyone, anytime.” To that end, we recruit exceptionally talented young physician colleagues.

The UCI Emergency Medicine Residency is a three-year program, approved by the Residency Review Committee in February 1989, and has been fully accredited for the maximum term ever since by the ACGME. Thanks to Dr. Mark Langdorf for his long-standing commitment to emergency medicine, not just in the establishment of the residency, but also successfully moving us from a Division of Internal Medicine to a full-fledged Department of Emergency Medicine over a decade ago.  On a personal level, my roots run deep here at UCI where I graduated from college and later completed my residency in 2000. Since joining the faculty in 2001, UCI has been my home!

Clinical practice at UCI Medical Center as diverse as the patient populations we serve. As a former county hospital, we continue to care for the underserved of Orange County, elevating the standard of care for our uninsured, underinsured, publicly insured, or privately insured patients alike. Our patients present from public health clinics private university practices, giving trainees the opportunity to participate in complex levels of care on every shift. All of this is in the background of being a Level 1 Trauma Center, a STEMI and Stroke Center, and a Level I Geriatric Center of Excellence, making a diverse clinical experience inherent to training here. When paired with excellent ancillary and nursing teams, you will be able to focus on the tasks of a physician – outstanding patient care.

One of the things I am most proud of is our dynamic and innovative educational leadership team!  They are in charge of developing an interactive, technologically advanced curriculum that keeps you engaged and learning at the right pace for a successful career in emergency medicine.  In addition, we include a more personalized training format that guarantees to cover both the basic and most up-to-date, evidence-based, knowledge for our specialty.  We pride ourselves on being a leader in medical education!

The caliber of residents in our program is outstanding in every sense of the word!  In terms of their leadership qualities, interpersonal skills, intellectual curiosity and clinical prowess, the residents at UC Irvine are the some of the top in the country! The only piece that is missing, which we provide to you during your training, is the clinical experience and judgment to become an outstanding clinician and leader in our specialty.

Our graduates have excellent job prospects and have had careers in academics, administration, and clinical practice in the most desirable ED groups and locations within Orange County and around the country. Our graduates have been universally successful in pursuing post-graduate fellowships in numerous subspecialties, while other graduates have completed advanced degrees such as MBA or MPH programs.
