UC Irvine Department of Emergency Medicine International Research Fellowship in Population Health is designed to train junior faculty investigators in the field of emergency medicine research and population health. The goal of the fellowship is to assist academic-minded emergency physicians in becoming clinical research scientists. 

The one-year fellowship will focus on advanced clinical research skills. The fellow will have educational funding to take classes on research methodology. In addition, the fellow will gain valuable administrative experience in learning how to function as a research director. There is an optional second year with approval.


The goals of the fellowship are (1) identification of appropriate areas of research activities, (2) research methodology and experimental design, (3) preparation of grant proposals, (4) scientific writing: preparation of abstracts for scientific meetings and manuscripts for peer review journal publication and (5) administrative preparation as a research director.


  • Deliver two lectures per year to Emergency Medicine students or residents in the focus area.
  • Participate in weekly research meetings with faculty mentor(s)
  • Participate in the Emergency Medicine Undergraduate Research Associates Program (established in ’97), one of the most successful in the country.
  • Participate in other departmental educational activities such as journal club, grand rounds, case conferences, and resident/student teaching. 
  • Serve as a reviewer for the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine: Integrating Emergency Care with Population Health or WestJEM ( 
  • Provide formal mentorship to selected Emergency Medicine medical students, residents or visiting research scholars working on research projects. 

Program Description

The research scholar will function as a visiting researcher within the Department of Emergency Medicine. Fellows will have their own formal research education through established research courses and conferences. Weekly meetings with mentors will help shape the fellow into becoming an independent researcher.


The program will be headed by Bharath Chakravarthy, MD MPH and Shahram Lotfipour MD MPH. UCI Emergency Medicine Research scholars will meet regularly with their Research scholars will be required to submit progress reports every six months to the department chair and the Department of Emergency Medicine clinical research directors. 


Applicants must have emergency medicine residency training. Sponsorship is required to provide a guarantee for tuition and professional fees incurred as part of the International Research Fellowship in Population Health.
