Prospective Students

The International Fellowship Medical Programs are intended for highly motivated international scholars, with approved sponsorship.

Credentials Required

To apply to an International Fellowship Program, please email the following documents for the committee's review of your credentials to

Required for all fellowships

  • One page personal statement with goals and expectation for entering the fellowship
  • Resume
  • Documentation of fellowship financial support and/or SACM letter for admission dated within six months
  • Preferred start date
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Documentation of residency completion
  • Documentation of board certification if applicable
  • Applicant professional photo

J-1 Visa

The J-1 Research Scholar visa is sponsored by UC Irvine. The research scholar primarily conducts research, observing or consulting in connection with a research project, and is also allowed to teach or lecture.


Sponsorship is required to provide a guarantee for tuition and professional fees incurred as part of the International Fellowship Medical Program. Typical sponsorship letters are from SACM, university, local or national governments. These letters should be dated within six months, duration and components of financial sponsorship.
