Message from the Director

Wirachin Hoonpongsimanont, MD, director, Undergraduate Medical Education, Department of Emergency Medicine
Dr. Wirachin Hoonpongsimanont, director of Undergraduate Medical Education

We have a very diverse mix of patients that will expose you to every facet of emergency care.

You will see patients immediately as they present to the Emergency Department and follow them throughout their ED course until the disposition. Our nursing and support personnel are excellent.

The emergency medicine clerkship consists of experiences in direct patient care of acutely ill patients, selected readings from an emergency medicine textbook, simulation cases and weekly resident lectures as well as dedicated student case conferences.

We implement interactive learning technique ie. Team-based learning and flipped classroom into all our education sessions. The topics include Approach to abdominal pain, shock, chest pain and altered mental status. Student will also participate in task training sessions: suture, intravenous placement and central line placement. We offer intubation workshop and EKG interpretation workshop as options along with elective EM students.

You will be expected to actively participate in these lectures.

You also will perform procedures under supervision, including incision and drainage, suturing, ultrasound-guided central line placement, lumbar puncture and paracentesis.

We provide every student with an interactive atmosphere conducive to learning with ample faculty teaching and feedback to make this the best clerkship rotation for you.

We also provide experience in emergency ultrasonography and opportunities for research.

If you need assistance, contact me or Clerkship Coordinator Jessica Holland, who is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

We look forward to having you.
